Selly Oak District Convention Awards

At the end of today’s session Councillor McCarthy and Steve McCabe MP awarded individuals from the different wards for outstanding services to their community – Winners were chosen by their ward Councillors for contributions in volunteering or active citizenship.

The Winners

Brandwood Ward: Roger Dennis (Brandwood Centre) for his work around the Lifford woodland area and the way he has multiplied his own effectiveness by involving local organisations like Challenge adn national organisations like National Trust as well as a local residents ro restore to public use an overgrown area adjacent to Lifford Reservoir.

Billesley Ward: Lynda Batchelor (R & B Learning centre at Moseley Rugby Foundation) – For their work with children in a an after school project.. They also run computer skills training for older members of the community anD supporting CV writing and job applications.

Bournville Ward: Joint award to Peter Walker (Chair Stirchley Neighbourhood forum) and Brenda Thomas (vice chair) – for their work for the neighbourhood forum, Not only have they made Stirchely NF one of the most effective and active an engaging forums in the city (independently judged) but also how they have worked with other nearby forums and community groups and help make the Hazelwell Fun Day, which goes from strength to strength, a great success.

Selly Oak ward: John Clayton – For his excellent work for his local Flood Action group and Selly Park South Neighbourhood Forum, particularly the development of their website, along with his support towards the formation on the friends of Pebble Mill Playing fields.

 

Special Recognition Awards

As chosen by the District Chair and Service Integration Head.

Special mentions to the Micheal Finnemore and Hughie Spence for their committed work on Druids Heath day-in-day-out for the community.

Winner: Emma Woolf – For her dedicated work with the Friends of Cotteridge Park culminaing in the awarding of Green Flag status for the park earlier on this year. There is a great programme of communiy events in the Park ranging from Tai Chi to the annual Cocomad festival..
